Hanifaru Bay during a feeding event.
The Short
Answer
Hanifaru Bay is a protected inlet on an uninhabited island in Baa Atoll — the largest known manta ray feeding station in the world, and during the season one of the most remarkable things you can see in the Maldives. Because nobody can stay on it, the real question is which island to stay on nearby.
Dharavandhoo is the closest inhabited island — about ten minutes by speedboat from the harbour to the bay — and the only one nearby with its own domestic airport, twenty minutes from Malé. Staying here means you can be in the water when the rangers confirm the mantas are feeding, rather than committing to a schedule set the day before.
Dimora Blu is our boutique guesthouse on Dharavandhoo's beach — three room types, Mélo Wellness Spa, dining with sand in your toes, and the bikini beach right in front. We time Hanifaru departures around the tides, and boats leave from the harbour a few minutes away. Read about the Hanifaru Bay experience.
Your
Options
A guesthouse on Dharavandhoo
The closest beds to Hanifaru Bay, on an inhabited island with a village, a bikini beach, and the domestic airport. Guesthouse rates are a fraction of resort rates, and the boat ride to the bay is ten minutes. This is what we built Dimora Blu to be — on the beach, among the village, personal.
A resort in Baa Atoll
Several private-island resorts sit within the atoll, some closer to the bay than others. They run Hanifaru excursions on scheduled days, usually at resort pricing. If you want alcohol with dinner and a private island, this is your route — expect a longer boat ride and less flexibility around feeding events.
Another local island
Maalhos, Kamadhoo, and a few other inhabited islands in Baa Atoll also have guesthouses. All are further from Hanifaru Bay than Dharavandhoo, and most involve a speedboat transfer from Dharavandhoo's airport anyway — worth knowing when you compare.
Common
Questions
Can you stay at Hanifaru Bay itself?
No. Hanifaru Bay is an uninhabited marine protected area within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — there is no accommodation on it, and overnight stays are not permitted. Everyone who visits stays on a nearby island and arrives by boat.
Which island is closest to Hanifaru Bay?
Dharavandhoo. It is the closest inhabited island to Hanifaru Bay — about ten minutes by speedboat — and the only one nearby with its own domestic airport. Dimora Blu is a boutique guesthouse on Dharavandhoo's beach.
Is a guesthouse or a resort better for visiting Hanifaru Bay?
Both work; the difference is distance, flexibility, and cost. A guesthouse on Dharavandhoo puts you ten minutes from the bay at a fraction of resort rates, which matters because manta activity follows tides and ranger confirmations rather than fixed schedules. Resorts in Baa Atoll also run trips, usually as scheduled excursions from further away.
When is manta season at Hanifaru Bay?
May through November, with peak feeding events usually between June and October, around the full and new moons. Visits are snorkel-only and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, with limited group sizes.
